Earned Pace Progression for Runners Who Strength Train
For a runner who also lifts, temporary muscular fatigue is a normal part of the week. EPP separates 'today I was tired' from 'my fitness has changed', so heavy leg days do not silently push future pace targets in the wrong direction.

Why EPP fits this runner
A slower work average the day after heavy squats does not automatically become a new floor.
EPP does not push pace, volume and gym load upward in the same week — only one variable earns priority at a time.
Effort and control matter as much as splits, so a session can be 'consolidate' rather than 'fail' when legs are heavy.
Quality running is scheduled with awareness of when lower-body strength was performed, not against it.
Why strength training and running can work together
For most runners outside of elite race preparation, adding regular strength training is one of the highest-value additions they can make to a training week. A systematic review by Blagrove and colleagues concluded that strength work may improve running economy and related performance markers in distance runners, without meaningfully increasing body mass when programmed sensibly.
Strength work also builds force capacity for hills, resilience through the late kilometres of a race, and structural tolerance to repeated ground contacts. For a runner who lifts for its own sake — bodybuilding, powerlifting, functional fitness or sport-specific work — running can complement general conditioning and cardiovascular health without needing to surrender either practice.

Why fixed running progression can fail hybrid athletes
The pattern is familiar. Monday brings a heavy lower-body session — five sets of squats, three sets of Romanian deadlifts, some accessory work. On Tuesday, the calendar says five kilometre repetitions at 4:20/km. The runner turns up, does the work honestly, and averages 4:24/km. A rigid plan reads this as a failure. A calendar-based plan pushes on to the next 'harder' step anyway.
Neither response is correct. The most likely explanation is not lost fitness. It is recent, temporary muscular fatigue — the same fatigue that would resolve within a day or two and leave the runner perfectly capable of the original target. Fyfe and colleagues' review of concurrent training explains why: strength and endurance stimuli share recovery resources, and scheduling has a meaningful effect on how much interference actually shows up on the day.
EPP treats the day-after-lifting session as evidence that has to be read carefully. If the runner completed every rep, kept the last one at the same pace as the first, and finished in control, that is a consolidate outcome, not a hold — the fitness is present, the readiness on that particular day is not.
How EPP helps hybrid runners
EPP was designed around exactly this ambiguity. The engine does not treat a single hard-legged session as a demotion, and it does not force a target upwards on the basis of one accidentally fast rep.

Weekly design principles
The single most useful principle for hybrid athletes is separation. Where possible, quality running and heavy lower-body strength should not sit on the same day, and ideally not on consecutive days when both are near maximal. When they must share a day, prioritise the one you care most about that week and treat the other as maintenance.
Two easier design choices help almost every hybrid runner: put the harder of the two sessions first when they share a day, and use the following day as active recovery rather than another quality stimulus. EPP will not object to that structure — it simply expects that whatever session you do arrives with real, honest evidence.

Limitations and honest caveats
- EPP cannot eliminate concurrent-training interference — scheduling and total load still matter.

- Persistent pain should not be dismissed as normal soreness.
- EPP does not design your gym programme, and it does not replace a strength coach.
