Flexible cycle length

Seven-day weeks are not a physiological law. Nine- and ten-day cycles often fit better.

What changes with age

Recovery from a hard session often takes longer with age. Muscle mass and tendon stiffness change, and hormonal shifts across the lifespan affect adaptation and recovery. Louis and colleagues describe age-related changes in muscle and adaptation, while Tiidus and others document the influence of hormonal changes on muscle damage and recovery. None of that reads 'runners over 40 cannot improve'. It reads 'the same programme that worked at 25 is unlikely to be the right one at 55'.

Why seven-day progression may be too rigid

A seven-day training week is a social convention, not a physiological one. For many masters runners, packing two quality sessions and a long run into every seven days simply outruns recovery. The evidence for training-load management (Gabbett) and the IOC consensus statement on load in sport both emphasise individualising progression relative to recent load and demonstrated recovery — not sticking to a fixed calendar.

A nine- or ten-day cycle spreads the same volume with an extra recovery day between quality stimuli. The exact number matters less than the principle: the plan bends to recovery, not the other way around.

Strength training becomes non-optional

For runners over 40, structured strength training is one of the most protective and performance-relevant investments they can make. Blagrove and colleagues' review supports improved running economy from concurrent strength training; Louis and colleagues emphasise the value of maintaining strength across the lifespan. EPP treats strength work as a first-class stimulus rather than an optional extra.

How EPP behaves for masters runners

The EPP engine already integrates recovery, form and next-day feedback into every decision. In a masters block, those signals carry additional weight. A faster interval average earned with poor sleep and elevated effort is more often a consolidate than a progress, and Runallo will suggest another clean attempt before promoting a target.
